Inspecting Without Touching
Not every inspection needs contact, coupling gel, or radiation.
Sometimes, electricity itself does the job.
Eddy Current Testing (ET) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that uses electromagnetic induction to detect surface and near-surface flaws in conductive materials.
It’s fast, clean, and ideal when conventional methods can’t be used — like when components are painted, coated, or in service.
By reading subtle electrical signals, ET transforms invisible changes in conductivity or geometry into clear indications of cracks, corrosion, or material degradation.
No consumables, no downtime — just pure electromagnetic precision. ⚙️
How Eddy Current Testing Works
ET is built on Faraday’s Law of Induction: when a coil carrying alternating current is brought close to a conductive surface, it generates circular electrical currents — the eddy currents.
If the material is flawless, those currents flow evenly.
But if there’s a crack, pit, or discontinuity, the current path is disturbed — and the resulting change in the coil’s impedance can be detected, measured, and analyzed.
A typical ET setup includes:
- 🧲 Probe and instrument setup – selecting frequency and coil configuration.
- 🔄 Surface scanning – moving the probe over the part’s surface.
- 📈 Signal analysis – interpreting impedance variations on the instrument display.
- 🧾 Evaluation and reporting – classifying indications according to project standards.
The method is sensitive to very small cracks, coating thickness, conductivity changes, and even material mix-ups — all without surface preparation or contact liquids.
Applications and Advantages
ET’s flexibility makes it a favorite in industries where speed, safety, and precision are paramount:
- ✈️ Aerospace – detecting surface cracks in turbine blades, rivets, and fasteners.
- 🚄 Rail and transportation – checking wheelsets, axles, and brake discs.
- 🛢️ Oil & Gas – inspecting heat exchanger tubes and pipelines for corrosion or cracking.
- ⚙️ Manufacturing and maintenance – verifying coating thickness, material grade, and conductivity.
- ⚡ Power generation – monitoring turbine and condenser tubes in-service.
Because ET requires no contact and minimal preparation, it’s one of the most efficient inspection methods available — especially for repetitive or automated checks.
Standards, Certification, and Competence
As with all NDT methods, ET demands qualified personnel and strict adherence to international standards:
- ISO 9712 – Qualification and certification of NDT personnel
- ASNT SNT-TC-1A – Personnel qualification and training framework
- EN ISO 15548 – Eddy current testing equipment and procedures
- ASTM E376 / E2338 – Conductivity and flaw detection using eddy currents
Certification levels define operator responsibility:
- Level I – performs tests under supervision.
- Level II – interprets results and prepares reports.
- Level III – defines techniques, validates procedures, and ensures compliance.
At Insight Advisory SAGL, our ET inspectors are ISO 9712 / ASNT Level II and III certified, ensuring reliable, traceable, and repeatable inspections — from aviation-grade alloys to subsea stainless steels.
Advanced Eddy Current Applications
Modern ET technology goes far beyond simple probes.
We use advanced systems such as:
- Eddy Current Array (ECA) – enabling faster, wider coverage with 3D mapping.
- Remote field and pulsed ET – for detecting corrosion through thick walls or coatings.
- Automated scanning tools – for uniform, high-resolution inspections across complex geometries.
These methods generate digital datasets that can be stored, trended, and reviewed — turning inspection into actionable intelligence.
Integration and Data Management
ET integrates seamlessly with Insight Advisory’s broader inspection framework.
Results are recorded digitally, linked to component IDs, and cross-referenced with VT, PT, and UT findings to provide a unified integrity report.
This cross-method integration ensures that no defect type escapes detection — and that every inspection adds measurable value to the project.
From Induction to Insight
Eddy Current Testing may rely on invisible fields and tiny signals, but its impact is tangible.
It allows inspections without dismantling, without interruption, and without compromise — keeping operations running and assets safe.
At Insight Advisory SAGL, we transform electromagnetic data into clarity, compliance, and confidence.
Because to us, ET is not just about detecting flaws — it’s about predicting performance.
When current flows, confidence follows.
